This coming October will see the official launch of the Austin-Travis County Sobering Center; however, before then, the center will open its doors for a limited time in late August.
The center will offer both emergency personnel and law enforcement officers with an alternative option to help individuals who are found to be intoxicated rather than taking them to the hospital or transporting them to jail.
The center will be open from 8:00 AM until 8:00 PM beginning on August 23, and it will be Thursday through Saturday. This announcement was made during a recent Travis County Commissioners’ meeting by the center’s executive director.
The center will also occupy the former home of the Travis County Medical Examiner’s office. Once it goes into full-time operation on October 1, it will be open on a 24/7 basis.
According to information released by the center, more than 2,000 people every year are booked into the Travis County Jail on public intoxication charges.
